Asia’s most prestigious and largest running event, the Tata Mumbai Marathon, is scheduled to take place on January 19, 2020. The Family Planning Association of India (FPA India) is inviting runners to RUN4FP to raise funds for its campaign ‘Let’s Get Girls Back to School’.
The campaign will raise awareness on the high incidence of girls dropping out of school on reaching puberty in India. One in five girls drop out of school and 46 percent of girls do not attend secondary school. A factor adding to the high drop-out rate is the start of menstrual periods in adolescent girls. Dropping out of school effectively breaks their link with the outside world. It also leads to early marriages and early and repeated pregnancies. The lack of education places them at a disadvantage, reducing livelihood opportunities and making them victims of domestic abuse, violence and other social ills.
FPA India envisions a day when no girl misses school simply because she starts menstruating, all girls complete their education, marriage and child-bearing age are delayed and women and girls live healthy and dignified lives. It aims to ensure that under-served girls and women have access to high-quality, affordable sanitary napkins, and adolescent girls have access to support systems to negotiate the challenges that come with adolescence at individual, familial, social and cultural levels.
